No, I do unfortunately not have the same microclimate as in the garden of René, he has a much better microclimate because of urban warming. I am situated about 300 km further north with no houses around us to "pump up the temperature". Maybe you remember, when you were visiting a few years back, that the west coast largest sanddune, "Rubjerg Knude", at the Northsea coast is visible from Aleksander's room. Also we have a problem with snow blowing into the garden during the winter, just a few centimeter of snow can easily become 100 cm snow drifts (we have had up to 250 cm snow drifts) when it blows in from the many hectares of farmers fields around us. Just 6 km north in the center of Hjørring, the microclimate is much better, and I have a friend living and gardening there, and he can have so many special plants, which only survive a few winters here. But, one thing we do have up here, is a lot more sunhours, we may not have so high temperatures, but we do get much more sunshine, and it's probably also a little more dry here too, with fewer rainy days. Well this year it was too little rain, we had severe drought twice this year, first in the late winter early spring and from mid June to early August, now the plants looks better, but the potato plants and some vegetables were dried to death. We also most likely have much more beautiful sun-rice and sun-sets all year around :-) In a few years when our fence with Fargesia has grown up, the snow will stop 3-4 meters earlier, so it will hopefully not be blown so far into the garden anymore, well that's the plan with the fence.

I think, that you did get a few seeds of Yucca 'Elena's Star' x thompsoniana (2010-014) in 2011, did any of those germinate?

I did sow about 400 seeds of this cross, and I only have a very few germinating in 2011 and 2012.

The climate is almost the same. Benny are living in Jutland climate zone 3-4 and i am living in Sjælland near Copenhagen climate zone 4
But benny have some more snow in the Winter period.

Hi Benny,

this spring I found some seeds of your Y.((Bright Edge' x glauca 1809 A) x rostrata/thompsoniana. I sow them in May and the germintion rate was near 100%.
So I'm proud to have now roundabout 20 young seedlings of this wonderful hybrid.
Here's the second seedling I sow in 2012. It has very stiff leaves and looks more than a Y. rostrata/thompsoniana.

what do you think: for my opinion it makes sense when we cross Y. glauca in the BMJ glauca/filamentosa-hybrids again to get hybrids with smaller leaves.

see how this seedlings grow.

Yes, this is exactly what I did in 2012, for the exact same reason, to create a Yucca which looks like very much a Yucca glauca, but grow faster and be more moisture resistant.

I used 3 narrow leafed hybrids and mixed with two different Yucca glauca:

The seed parent of the last one is a sibling to Yucca 'Elena's Star', but it's very different in bloom and a much smaller plant also.

I did also "cross" the two glauca's with each others pollen, and I hope, that the plants from this breeding will grow well and fast, as both parents has handled the Danish weather conditions very well.

The seeds did germinate well and the plants grow well also (in pots inside an unheated greenhouse.) and a few planted into the garden this summer.

Hello Horst,

Very nice specimen you have of Yucca (1809A) (Bright Edge' x glauca) x rostrata/thompsoniana. I always think, that the young plants of hybrids with Yucca rostrata and thompsoniana looks very much like Yucca reverchonii. Except that the hybrids grow a lot faster than Yucca reverchonii.

I think, that my 1809A will bloom again next summer and probably also 1827A Yucca filamentosa x glauca which you have growing in your garden too. Yucca 'Elena's Star' were set back after blooming and it was squashed by snow pressure two winters in a row, but is slowly recovering now.

Hello René and other climate interested,

Oh yes René, we do get a lot of snow blown into the garden here.

In the years I have been living here in northern Denmark (since 1991) The winters has been ranging from USDA zone 6a to 7b from - 21 to -14 as the lowest winter temperatures, in most of those winters it has been in the zone 7a to 7b range. But during the last 5 winters it's the snow pressure which have been the biggest problem here, not so much the temperatures. In the winter most of our garden is in shade, so snow is a very long time to melt. This year there were snow from January 16th to March 7th. with 100 to 250 cm of snow for at least 3-5 weeks until it started to melt. The four year before this the last snow were not melted until the first week of April!

Those hybrids which handle the snow best is those which have genes from Yucca glauca, I look forward to see how the Yucca 'Elena's Star' x thompsoniana will show to be, as it "only" have 25% glauca in it. Also the wild forms of Yucca glauca from Nebraska, South Dakota and Montana does OK with about 100 cm of wet snow in top of them for some months. Whereas those from New Mexico, and also some of those from Colorado does not like to be underneath too much snow for months. And all trunkforming Yuccas die above ground or totally, when they have been buried under snow for months.

Thanks to Benny for this post about climate.
Especially glauca has good survival genes, last year i got two new Glauca from South Dakota i really hope that these will survive
