It's very nice to see that there are some new Yucca-breeders this year.

It has not been a very successful breeding season for me. But I have made 7 new crosses.

First, I would like to send a BIG thanks to all of those of you, which have mailed pollen to me.

This years flowering season for the Yuccas were very late, the last flowers did fall of September 2nd. And the weather conditions has been very bad, with frequently rains showers and low temperatures. Here in our garden there were only 4 days with temperatures above 25C in 2012 and most "summer" days was in the 15-20C range. I have hand pollinated 41 flowers with a wide range of pollen from Yucca friends all over the world. 25% of the pollinations has resulted in seedpods and there are at the moment 10 seed pods growing, of which one might abort before it's mature, due to a small fungus infection at the top of the pod.

The 10 pods are from the following 7 different crosses:

500 Yucca sp. #500 X elephantipes Gigant form, (Pollen from Garda Italy collected by Frédéric Julien, France). 2 seed pods.
500 Yucca sp. #500 X pallida (pollen from Sascha Swatek, Germany)
1454 Yucca "Karlsruhensis Type 2" X elata "White Sands" (pollen from Christian Winkelbech, Germany) 2 seed pods.
1454 Yucca "Karlsruhensis Type 2" X pallida (pollen from Sascha Swatek, Germany) 2 seed pods.
1454 Yucca "Karlsruhensis Type 2" X elephantipes Gigant form, (Pollen from Garda Italy collected by Frédéric Julien, France).
1578 Yucca filamentosa garden form X elata "White Sands" (pollen from Christian Winkelbech, Germany). Seed pod has a little fungus!

Those which has genes from the Yucca elephantipes Gigant form, will most likely not be hardy up here in Northern Denmark, but will be interesting for gardeners in the warmer parts of Europe, adding new forms to the existing trunk forming Yuccas available today.

I hope that the seed pods will hang on, we have 12-18 m/sec. again today, so they get their weekly autumn shake.

Well benny, filamentosa x elephantipes sounds very interesting, i could be ntrested in a few seeds if possible. Backcrossingit with something more hardy of any kind would give spectacular plants....
The small filamentosa/flaccida shown early n this tread very much resembles what i have from alabama. I used that to cross with both cancava and filamentosa from nc givng very fast growing plants. Will make pictures soon.

wow, great hybrids with elephantipes!! It will be interesting to see if any will be more hardy than 'regular' elephantipes.

the only notable hybrid in my garden is Y. filamentosa/flaccida x baccata and Y. gloriosa/flaccida x [(constricta x filamentosa) x filata].

Yes Sascha, It was only the White Sands elata pollen which were working for me. Steen which you also mailed pollen to, did not get any luck either. I am convinced, that the extreme cold weather and the frequent rain showers in this season is the main reason. It has been very difficult to find days in which it were possible to pollinate, and those days were often followed by rain later mostly within 6-12-24 hours.

Next year I think that a few of my glauca hybrids might have the right size to bloom and maybe also one with elata genes if I'm lucky.

Hello Tim,

Any thing crossed with Yucca baccata will be cool. I have some of the Hungarian hybrids with baccata genes and they are beautiful.

Here is one of them:



Yucca Janakidisz hybrid glauca ssp. stricta x baccata.

Your "garden Yucca" crossed with baccata, might become a baccata like plant which is more tolerant to moisture, Congratulations.

ich denke dieses Jahr war insgesammt kein besonders gutes Hybridisierungsjahr.
Bei uns war das Wetter ebenso sehr bescheiden.

it will be interesting too see how your newly created Y. filatas will look since your parents are slightly different. Keep us updated.

Früchte auf Y. pallida sind immer noch weich und wohl noch nicht reif.
Auf Filata habe ich schon vor 2 Wochen geerntet.

No, this one is "pure" Yucca glauca ssp. stricta x baccata, made by Janakidisz. The hybrid you think of is Yucca (aloifolia x stricta, made by Demeter Janakidisz) x baccata, this is made by Ferenc Kurilla, Hungary. You can find a photo of that hybrid here: Hybrids with genes from Yucca baccata.
